The Last Lear

The Last Lear
This is not a formal movie review, but rather a message to all you movie buffs, the people who enjoy watching good cinema ! Pls go and see this movie - The Last Lear, you will love it !

I saw it with my family last weekend and it was a completely enthralling experience. With wonderfully creative direction by Rituparno Ghosh, he showed again , what a director who is fully in control of the script, the characters & the actors can do !

Based on a play written by Utpal Dutta, the story is as expected marvelous. It depicts how true love can be - totally unselfish, totally undemanding and abslutely unmindful of any rules (Satvik love) It also depicts on the contrary how feverishness towards perfection (also a kind of love - Rajasik love) can be the cause of so much misery ! One of the best selling points of the movie is the unique narrative style adopted by Rituparno (which I am not going to divulge now !)

The actors simply give outstanding performance - Amitabh's baritone voice booming in the hall with Shakespearean recitations gave me the goosebumps ! (And it still does!) Arjun Rampal was matured and measured and rendered his part with 100% conviction. I felt that the other actors like Preity Zinta and Jishu Sengupta were pretty good too ! (Preity Zinta used her source voice in of the scenes - it was clear and distinct !)
But the actor who literally swept me off with her performance was Shefali Shah - wow what creative talent . Such spontaneity, such sensitivity , such confidence ! Even before she uttered a sinlge, her eyes conveyed half of what she has to speak.

Some of dialogues I liked in the movie are :

"It is imporant to be politically correct, but not at the cost of somebody's feelings"
"You never know when your best moment will come"
"Any relationship is based on trust. When someone asks a physical proof of something - thats the end of the relationship, finished, because it shows you are not trusted."

So even if you do not go to the hall to see this movie, do watch it on TV or DVD when you get any opportunity.
